The seed is used in preparing popular Nigerian Ogbono soup. Ogbono soup, also known as draw soup. The Igbo people of Nigeria name it Ogbono, and the Yoruba name it Apon. Consumption of Ogbono soup varies; some prefer it plain with no extra vegetables, while others enjoy it with some vegetables. A third group loves their Ogbono soup with Okra, while some people would add Egusi to it.
Ogbono is high in protein content, fibre and essential fats. A 100 grams serving of ogbono seeds provides about 683 calories. It is rich in fatty acids such as oleic, palmitic, linoleic, linolenic, stearic, and lauric acids, which are essential for performing various bodily functions, maintaining the health of the nervous system and for muscular development.
